Driving Licence Medical Examination

Some drivers are required to undergo a medical examination in order to renew or apply for a driving licence. This examination assesses whether you are fit to drive safely.

When do you need a driving licence medical examination?

A driving licence medical examination may be required if you:

  • are aged 75 or over and wish to renew your driving licence;
  • have a medical condition that may affect your fitness to drive;
  • have an impairment of your sight, hearing or mobility;
  • receives a request from the CBR to undergo a medical examination.

The CBR determines whether an inspection is required and what information is needed for this.

How do you apply for a driving licence medical examination?

A driving licence medical examination begins with filling in a Health declaration at the CBR. You can do this via My CBR or using a paper form.

Following an assessment of your Health Declaration, the CBR may decide that a medical examination is required. You will be notified of this by the CBR via email or letter. You will then need to make an appointment with a doctor yourself. The CBR’s referral will state which doctor you should see and how to find them.

To a medical examiner

You may sometimes need an independent medical examiner for a driving licence medical. This doctor assesses your health on behalf of the CBR and completes the necessary forms. GPs do not usually carry out driving licence medicals for their own patients.

You can find a medical examiner yourself online, for example by searching for ‘driving licence medical examination [place name]’. Alternatively, you can contact one of the organisations listed below to make an appointment:

To see a medical specialist

The CBR may also refer you to a medical specialist. This is a doctor with specialist knowledge in a particular field. If, for example, you have heart problems, you may be referred to a cardiologist. For certain mental health conditions, a referral to a psychiatrist may be necessary.

The CBR’s notification will state which specialist you should see. You can usually choose a specialist yourself. In some cases, the CBR will assign a specialist to you.

Arrange an inspection

Would you like to renew your driving licence? If so, make sure you submit your application in good time. Assessing medical information may take extra time.
