Apply for a disabled parking permit or a disabled parking space

Do you have difficulty walking due to an illness or disability? If so, you may be eligible for a disabled parking permit or a disabled parking space near your home. On this page, you will find information about the eligibility criteria, the application process and the medical assessment.

When might you be eligible?

A disabled parking permit (GPK) or disabled parking space (GPP) is intended for people with a long-term, severe mobility impairment. You must be able to demonstrate that, for more than 6 months, you have been unable to walk more than 100 metres, even with the aid of a mobility aid (such as a rollator, walking stick or prosthesis).

About the disabled parking permit (GPK)

A disabled parking permit is personalised and can be applied for as either a driver’s permit or a passenger’s permit. With a driver’s permit, you hold a driving licence and drive the car yourself. With a passenger card, you are a passenger and are constantly dependent on a driver (you are also unable to get out of the car unaided).

A medical examination is required to apply. There is a charge for this examination. The card is valid for up to 5 years and can be used in the Netherlands and many European countries.

About the disabled parking space (DPS)

A disabled parking space (GPP) is a parking space designated specifically for your car, microcar or vehicle for the disabled. This parking space is usually located as close as possible to your home and has a sign displaying your vehicle’s registration number.

You can apply for a disabled parking space if you do not have your own parking space, such as a driveway or garage. The local authority will assess whether a suitable space is available. Businesses can also apply for a disabled parking space for an employee with a disability.

You can apply for a disabled parking permit and a disabled parking space from your local council. The council will assess your application.
